It’s a common affliction: People are going about their daily routines when they hear a snippet of a certain song and, wham, they temporarily lose control of normal brain function.

It’s that guy pounding the steering wheel and ripping into “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the car next to you. It’s that lady in ear buds using her outside voice to hum the chorus to “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman” in the grocery aisle. It’s the raised palm and conversation-halting phrase “Wait! I love this song” when a party-goer just has to attempt one of Michael Jackson’s high-pitched “hee-hee’s.”

It’s the reason people have flocked to the movies to see actor Rami Malek bring Freddie Mercury back to life in a Queen biopic, and why scores of tribute bands are taking their fandom to another level, giving themselves and audiences a chance to relive the sights and sounds of the ’60s, ‘70s and ’80s — spandex, sky-high hair and all.
